Technical explanation

getUserMedia() supplies an audio track, which is routed into the Web Audio API through an AnalyserNode. The meter shows recent RMS level and the waveform shows the time-domain signal. Recording uses MediaRecorder when the browser supports a compatible audio format.

A working microphone can still sound quiet, noisy, or distorted. The meter helps identify silence and clipping, but it cannot measure a microphone against a calibrated acoustic reference.

Troubleshooting

Flat or silent meter

Confirm the correct input is selected and not muted in the operating system. Check the physical mute switch on headsets and USB microphones.

Permission was denied

Reset the microphone permission for this site in your browser settings, then reload and start again.

Recording will not play

Some browsers do not support the same recording container they create. Try another browser or use the live meter as the primary test.

Background hum

Move USB microphones away from chargers and displays, use a headset microphone, or enable your operating system noise suppression.
