Keyboard Test

Test every key on your keyboard, see live key codes and modifiers, and detect keys that stick or repeat unexpectedly.

Privacy: Only key identifiers are displayed. Typed text is not captured, stored, or uploaded, and password fields are never targeted.

The test uses physical key codes, so it works across keyboard layouts. Some media, function and vendor keys are not exposed to web pages. A key that never highlights may be blocked by the browser or operating system.

How to use this tool

  1. Click inside the test area so it receives keyboard focus.
  2. Press keys one at a time and watch them light up on the layout.
  3. Check the key code, location, and modifier status for each press.
  4. Use Reset to clear tested keys or change the layout if needed.

Technical explanation

The page listens for keydown and keyup events and reads event.code, event.key, event.location, and modifier flags. event.code describes the physical key position; event.key reflects the character produced, which varies with layout and modifiers.

The test never reads input from other applications and cannot see keys pressed while the page is not focused. It also cannot inspect a keyboard at the firmware level.

Troubleshooting

A key does not highlight

Click the test area first, then try the key again. Browser shortcuts may be intercepted before the page receives them.

Wrong character appears

The operating-system keyboard layout may differ from the layout shown. Switch layouts or use the key-code display.

Keys repeat

Check the operating-system repeat settings. A stuck key usually repeats even after release; a hardware fault may require service.

Media keys do nothing

Many media and function keys are handled by the operating system and never reach the browser.
