Webcam Test

Check that your webcam works, preview the live image, switch cameras, and inspect the capture resolution and frame rate.

Privacy: Your camera stream stays in this browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, and the camera turns off when you stop the test or leave the page.

A webcam test confirms that the camera opens, that the browser reports a track and resolution, and that the preview updates. It cannot measure lens sharpness, colour calibration or low-light noise.

How to use this tool

  1. Click Start camera and allow access when your browser asks. Permission is never requested before this click.
  2. Check the live preview. Use the camera selector if your device has more than one camera.
  3. Read the reported resolution and frame rate, then try the mirror toggle and grid overlay.
  4. Click Stop camera when finished. Closing the tab also releases the camera.

Technical explanation

The test uses getUserMedia() to request a video track from the browser. The preview is drawn by a native HTML video element, so the image is shown locally. Browser-reported track settings expose width, height, and frame rate when the hardware and driver provide them.

A webcam can deliver a valid stream while still having a focus, colour, or low-light problem. This tool checks that the camera is detected and producing frames; it does not calibrate image quality or certify the sensor.

Troubleshooting

No permission prompt

Check the site permissions in your browser address bar. Blocked camera access must be reset there before the page can ask again. On macOS or Windows, also check system privacy settings.

Black preview

Close other apps that may hold the camera (video calls, security software), reconnect external cameras, and reload the page. Some virtual cameras only start after their companion app is running.

Wrong camera

Use the camera selector. Device labels are only exposed after permission has been granted, which is a browser privacy rule.

Frozen or low frame rate

USB bandwidth, lighting, and driver settings can limit frame rate. Try a lower resolution in your camera app or a different USB port.
