The noise meter shows relative loudness reported by the microphone. It is not a calibrated sound-level meter and cannot be used for legal or safety measurements.

How to use this tool

  1. Find a quiet moment and click Start noise test.
  2. Allow microphone access, then remain silent while the baseline is measured.
  3. Watch the noise floor and peak values update, and try the test in another location.
  4. Stop the test when finished to release the microphone.

Technical explanation

The analyser computes RMS and peak levels from the microphone signal. The reported dBFS value is relative to digital full scale, not sound pressure level (dB SPL).

Microphone gain, automatic gain control, and device processing vary widely. Results are useful for comparisons on the same device and in the same session, not as calibrated environmental noise measurements.

Troubleshooting

Noise floor stays at zero

Check that the microphone is connected, unmuted, and selected correctly. Some browsers apply aggressive noise suppression that removes quiet sounds.

Readings jump around

Fans, keyboards, traffic, and notifications create short peaks. Observe a longer period and compare averages.

Value is much lower than expected

dBFS is relative to the digital signal, not a calibrated room measurement.
