Technical explanation

The page calls getUserMedia({video:true}) to trigger the normal permission flow. A successful stream confirms both permission and a usable video track; a rejected promise exposes the browser error name.

Permission state can change outside the page. The Permissions API may expose a camera state in some browsers, but getUserMedia remains the authoritative check for actual access.

Troubleshooting

No prompt appears

If access is already blocked, the browser may reject immediately. Reset the camera permission for this site.

Permission is granted but no image

Another application may be using the camera. Close it and retry.

Camera not listed

Check the device connection and operating-system privacy settings.

Insecure context warning

Camera access normally requires HTTPS or localhost.
