Technical explanation

getDisplayMedia() captures a user-selected surface and MediaRecorder encodes it in a browser-supported container. The page never receives a list of your windows or the ability to start capture without the picker.

Recording performance depends on the encoder, resolution, and hardware. A successful recording confirms that the API and codec path work, not that every application will record smoothly.

Troubleshooting

The picker does not appear

getDisplayMedia requires a secure context, a user gesture, and browser support. Managed devices may disable it.

Recording is empty

Choose a surface that is actively changing. Some protected content cannot be captured.

No video preview

The selected MIME type may not be supported. Try another browser.

Audio is missing

This page records video only. System audio capture support varies by browser and platform.
