Mouse Test

Test mouse buttons, scroll wheel, double-click, pointer tracking, and estimate polling cadence with clear caveats.

Privacy: Pointer events are processed locally. No movement data is uploaded or stored.

Browser pointer events show buttons, movement and wheel steps, but they cannot measure DPI, polling rate or sensor accuracy. Use the dedicated click-speed test for timing.

How to use this tool

  1. Click each button on the mouse diagram and confirm it highlights.
  2. Scroll over the wheel area to test wheel direction and steps.
  3. Use the double-click and click-speed areas, then move the pointer to check tracking.
  4. Reset the test when you want a fresh count.

Technical explanation

Pointer Events and Mouse Events report button numbers, wheel deltas, timestamps, and coordinates. Polling-rate estimates use the interval between pointermove events, but browsers coalesce and throttle events, so the result is only a rough indication.

Buttons 3 and 4 are back and forward on many mice, but browser and operating-system mappings differ. High-DPI sensors cannot be calibrated accurately from JavaScript without a known movement distance.

Troubleshooting

Side buttons do nothing

Browsers often reserve back and forward buttons for navigation. Some mice map them to keyboard shortcuts instead.

Double-click is not detected

Adjust the operating-system double-click speed or test again with a deliberate pair of clicks.

Pointer movement looks jumpy

Close background applications and check whether browser hardware acceleration is enabled.

Polling rate looks low

Browsers throttle pointer events. A low estimate does not prove a low polling rate.
